Ibero-American Association of Energy Regulators (ARIAE)

ARIAE brings together 27 regulators from 20 countries in Latin America. Osinergmin has been an active member since 2002 and chaired the association from 2015 to 2018.

The purpose of ARIE is to promote the exchange of information and encourage the training of its members through working groups and the activities of the Ibero-American School of Energy Regulation (EIR).

EIR has an electricity office at the Pontifical Catholic University (PUC) of Chile and a hydrocarbons office at ESAN University of Peru.

The organization is chaired by André Pepitone da Nóbrega, General Director of the National Electric Energy Agency of Brazil (ANEEL)

The last meeting of ARIAE’s Assembly was held virtually on April 22, 2021, in which the preliminary results of a study on the impact of COVID-19 on Ibero-American regulators were discussed, and the report on energy and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development were shared. Finally, Osinergmin presented a pilot initiative among regulators to reinforce communication strategies. This initiative is already underway and includes entities from Colombia, Costa Rica, Chile, Mexico, Paraguay, the Dominican Republic, and Peru. At these meetings, we addressed the territorial communication strategies, the actions with a gender perspective, and the educational training programs to increase the responsible use of energy.

Likewise, on July 12, 2021, the report “SDG 7 in Latin America. Reaching the last mile: Affordable, safe, sustainable and modern energy for all people” was presented, in which our Tariff Regulation Manager participated in the segment “Real experiences of isolated electrification in Latin America.” The event can be seen in this link, and the report can be downloaded here in Spanish.

Currently, ARIAE is conducting a study with the Ibero-American School of Regulation, funded by the Interamerican Development Bank (IADB), for analyzing the COVID-19 effects in the energy sector in the region.
